What started back in 2016 as a small-batch hot sauce project has transformed into a local legend and without over hype, they serve the single best burgers on the South Coast.
I recently had the absolute pleasure of bringing my camera down to their Southbourne HQ to shoot one of their Taco Nights. Capturing the energy, the insanely good food, and the local vibe in a packed independent venue is exactly why I love food and event photography in Dorset.
From Small-Batch Hot Sauce to Southbourne Legend
If you know Skinny Malinkys, you know their motto: Full Flavour Misbehaviour.
Starting out as a homemade hot sauce operation born right here in Southbourne, they built a cult following through epic pop-ups and collabs, serving everything from intimate six-course tasting menus to their now-famous burgers. Today, they’ve got permanent spots at their Southbourne HQ on Seabourne Road and taking over the kitchen at The Bermuda Triangle in Ashley Cross.
Whether you're stopping by for a massive breakfast or sinking teeth into one of their ridiculous burger creations (like the truffle sriracha laced Truffle Shuffle, the heavy hitting Sloppy Jose, or the ultimate fried chicken monster The Colonel) the quality is unbeatable.
Capturing the Vibe: Shooting a Food & Drink Event at Skinny Malinkys
Photographing food in a bustling, intimate Southbourne restaurant comes with a unique set of fun challenges. You aren't in a sterile studio with artificial lights; you’re in the middle of a vibrant, living evening with real customers, fast moving chefs, and piping hot dishes coming hot off the pass.
My goal for the night was:
Highlight the Food: Making every single taco look mouth watering, punchy, and vibrant, showing off the rich textures and colourful cocktails.
Capture the Atmosphere: Telling the story of the night through candid shots of the kitchen team hard at work, handmade cocktails flowing, and locals having a killer time.
How I Shot It
To keep the imagery authentic to Skinny's bold branding, I focused on moody lighting that highlighted the fresh ingredients without losing that cool, intimate nighttime restaurant feel. From close-up, texture-rich food shots that make you hungry, to candid, unposed shots of people enjoying the event.
