Anxious About Your Wedding Photos? Tips for Relaxed & Natural Shots

Feeling nervous about your wedding photos? You’re not alone — many couples feel awkward or anxious in front of the camera. The good news is that with the right preparation, mindset, and photographer, you can have relaxed, natural wedding photos that truly capture your day.

Part of my job as a photographer is making my clients feel relaxed and at ease, so hopefully I can help you by providing my top tips for couples to feel calm, confident, and enjoy every moment while getting beautiful photos.

Tip 1: Choose the Right Photographer

Your photographer can make or break your wedding photo experience. Look for someone whose style you love — whether that’s documentary, candid, or creative wedding photography. Check out their portfolio and read client reviews to see how they work with couples.

Tip 2: Get to Know Your Photographer & Trust Them

Spend a little time chatting with your photographer before the big day. Meet them for a coffee or a drink and take them around the venue. You don’t want a complete stranger to be taking photos of you on your special day. Trusting your photographer means you can relax, forget the camera, and enjoy the moment. If you’re comfortable with them, it will show in your photos.

Tip 3: Have Fun & Laugh

The best photos often come from genuine laughter and fun moments. Don’t worry about being serious — play, joke, and enjoy each other’s company. Your happiness will shine through naturally in the images.

Tip 4: Posing Tips Without Feeling Posed

You don’t need stiff poses to get beautiful photos. Some simple tips:

  • Walk hand-in-hand naturally

  • Whisper something funny or sweet to each other

  • Gentle prompts from your photographer (e.g., “look at each other” or “hold hands and spin slowly”)

These small movements create natural, relaxed photos. Your photographer should be able to guide you through the whole process. Often, even if you feel uncomfortable, the photos still turn out great.

Tip 5: Embrace Candid Moments

In my experience, the most memorable wedding photos are unscripted, spontaneous moments — laughter, happy tears, dancing, or funny reactions. Let your photographer capture these real, emotional moments, and don’t try to control every shot. I promise, these will be your favourite shots from your day

Tip 6: Prepare & Know What Photos You Want

Make a simple shot list of must-have moments — family groups, first look, rings, details — so nothing important is missed. Being prepared helps you relax and focus on enjoying the day rather than worrying about what’s next.
