10 Tips to Make Your Wedding More Affordable

We’re in an age where weddings don’t need to be super traditional. I’m a huge fan of non-traditional weddings — ones that reflect your personality, your story, and what makes your relationship unique. The wedding is about you as a couple, not about everyone who is attending. Find a way to make your day personal, fun, and special - without spending your life savings. As long as you’re celebrating your love with your loved ones, that’s what truly matters.

Here are 10 practical tips to help make your wedding more affordable, while still keeping it beautiful and memorable.

1. Set a Realistic Budget Early

The easiest way to stick to your budget is to set one from the start. Knowing what you can spend helps you work out what’s most important to you as a couple. Whether that’s photography, food, or the venue and what can be scaled back.

2. Trim the Guest List

Smaller weddings reduce costs across catering, venue size, and décor. Do you really need to invite your mum’s childhood friend or a colleague you don’t really like? Focusing on the people who truly matter keeps costs down and makes the day feel more intimate.

3. Choose an Off-Peak Date

Weekdays or low-season dates can save thousands on venues and suppliers. If your heart is set on a particular location, checking availability during quieter months can make a huge difference.

4. DIY Where You Can

DIY can be a fun way to save money while adding a personal touch. Invitations, table décor, and wedding cakes are perfect examples. Just make sure it’s something you’ll actually enjoy doing — you don’t want it to turn into stress.

5. Get Creative with the Venue

Non-traditional venues like parks, community halls, or even a friend’s garden can be beautiful and budget-friendly. I worked on a wedding in 2025 that started with a few hours in a pub, followed by a walk down to the beach and a sea swim. It was honestly one of the most beautiful, unique, and personal days. Remember: the day is about you as a couple, not everyone else.

6. Hire an Affordable Photographer

Capturing your day is essential. These are the memories you’ll treasure forever. Hiring a photographer can be expensive, but there are ways to save. Students or newer photographers often offer lower rates, while still providing amazing photos. I’ve been photographing weddings for just a year, and I focus on affordable, candid storytelling that captures real moments without breaking the bank. And if you go with a more experienced photographer, it can still be worth the investment for peace of mind and quality.

7. Limit Extras

Think carefully about extras like elaborate floral arrangements, or luxury transport. What’s important to you? Scaling back on non-essentials won’t impact the joy of the day, but can save a surprising amount.

8. Borrow or Rent Attire

Wedding dresses, suits, and accessories don’t have to be brand new. Renting or borrowing can cut costs significantly and sometimes lead to a more unique, stylish look.

9. Simplify Catering & Drinks

Buffet-style meals, smaller cakes, or BYO drinks (where allowed) can make a big difference. Fancy something more unique? How about a picnic in the park or a relaxed family-style meal. It’s fun, memorable, and budget-friendly.

10. Make the Most of Friends and Family Talents

Loved ones can be a huge help. Maybe a friend can DJ, a family member can bake the cake, or someone you know can help with décor or photography. It saves money and makes the day feel more personal and meaningful.

Weddings don’t have to cost a fortune. With a little creativity, focus on what matters most, and smart planning, you can have a beautiful, memorable, and affordable day. And if you’re looking for an affordable wedding photographer who focuses on candid storytelling and capturing the real moments, I’d love to help make your day last forever.
